Computex 2024: AMD announces “the world’s most powerful desktop consumer processor”, AI laptop chips
At Computex 2024 in Taipei, Taiwan, AMD unveiled the Ryzen 9 9950X, the most powerful desktop consumer processor in the world, taking aim at Nvidia’s RTX AI PC notebooks featuring GeForce RTX 4070 GPUs.
At Computex 2024 in Taipei, Taiwan, AMD unveiled a number new AI PC CPUs, among them the Ryzen 9 9950X, which it bills as “the world’s most powerful desktop consumer processor.” The news is made in response to Nvidia, which hinted potential “RTX AI PC” laptops with “power-efficient systems-on-a-chip with Windows 11 AI PC capabilities” and “up to GeForce RTX 4070 GPUs.”
AMD revealed the AMD Ryzen 9000 Series CPUs for desktop and laptop computers, as well as the AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series, the company’s third generation of AI-enabled mobile processors.
“We were thrilled to have Microsoft, HP, Lenovo, Asus, and other important partners join us at Computex to introduce our next-generation Ryzen desktop and notebook processors,” stated Lisa Su, CEO of AMD.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with AMD to deliver these new Ryzen AI powered Copilot+ PCs,” continued Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. We have a strong commitment to working with AMD.
AMD CPUs for Computers with AI
Executives from Microsoft, HP, Lenovo, and Asus joined Su to present innovative PC experiences driven by desktop AMD Ryzen 9000 Series and 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series processors.
These include the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and Ryzen AI 9 365, the latter of which is the higher-end model with 50 TOPS NPU. Notably, Apple’s M4 features 38 TOPS NPU and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series has 45 TOPS.
With a maximum clock speed of 5.1GHz, a 32MB cache, and Radeon 890M graphics, the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 is a 12-core/24-thread processor; in contrast, the Ryzen AI 9 365 is a 10-core/12-thread processor with a maximum clock speed of 5.0GHz, a 34MB cache, and Radeon 880M graphics.
Microsoft noted that AMD Ryzen AI 300 Series CPUs outperform the company’s specifications for Copilot+ PCs. AMD-powered Copilot+ PCs from HP, such as the HP Pavilion Aero, were showcased. In a similar vein, Asus displayed a wide range of AI PCs for business users, consumers, content creators, and gamers powered by Ryzen AI 300 Series processors, while Lenovo unveiled forthcoming consumer and commercial laptops powered by the same chip family.
Desktop AMD Ryzen 9000 Series Processors AMD also unveiled the details of its next “Zen 5” CPU core, which the company claims is engineered for industry-leading performance and energy economy. Ryzen 9 9950X processors from AMD’s Ryzen 9000 Series, which are built on the “Zen 5” architecture, “are the world’s fastest consumer desktop processors.”
